From Construction to Conservation, These Women Have Found Their Stride In Niche Industries

For many of us, the first few months of any year are typically reserved for two things: rebuilding our finances after Christmas and setting our intentions for the months ahead.

Careers are often front of mind during this reflective period. Will I get a promotion? Should I switch to my dream career? Will I be happier freelancing? The questions can feel as infinite as they are daunting.

But the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 brought some cause for optimism, as businesses pledged their commitments to attract, nurture and retain more Black talent.

Unfortunately, progress has proven to be a slow process for many industries, with Black women getting the rougher end of the deal. 

A 2022 study found that Black women make up only 0.7% of UK tech workers compared to 1.8% of the general UK workforce. It’s a similarly sobering story in academia: only 41 of the 22,000 UK university professors are Black women.
