Editor's Letter: We Must Make Sure That Stephen Lawrence's Story Isn't Only Told By White People In Power

I usually don’t start thinking about the newsletter until the latter end of the week and then more often than not, as you probably all know by now, I’ll write the majority of it on a Sunday afternoon or evening. However, this week’s newsletter started writing itself in my mind on Monday, minutes after we started sharing last week’s newsletter on social media.

No doubt, like many of you when I woke up on Easter Monday, I spent the first few moments (read: hours) scrolling through my timelines & feeds in bed. As a result, I was quickly reminded that 22nd April was the first Stephen Lawrence Day - a national day that commemorated the life and legacy of the teenager. It is horrible to spell out the obvious in these newsletters, especially when I am talking to black women first and foremost, but we know that this day is needed. With Stephen’s death so interwoven into British fabric, as it revealed the institutional racism embedded in the British police force and how deeply racist Britain was and some will (rightly so) argue still is.
