A bride price, according to Google, is ‘a sum of money or quantity of goods given to a bride’s family by…the groom in some tribal societies.’ A dowry, also defined by Google, is ‘an amount of property, [goods] or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage.’ Both traditions have endured, despite coming under fire for accounts of terrible abuses of power and exploitation that have unfortunately been associated with them.

The question is, why have they endured and what has given them the ability to become part of cultures not traditionally associated with them? Six couples, four of which are interracial, explore how and why they honoured these traditions. Through this exploration the survival tactics of these traditions are uncovered as well as how they continue to be accepted by cultures unfamiliar with them.
