Are Your Beauty Influencer Faves No Longer Relatable?

I was a first year student at the University of Kent studying Journalism; I was trying to be as independent as possible and sadly failing. The only fun waiting for me back home was my TV and the Netflix icon until one day an international student and friend of mine told me about the wonders of YouTube. She suggested the name ‘Jackie Aina’ because apparently we were “twins” in every way, especially when it came to loving beauty. I clicked the subscribe button and never looked back.

Overtime I started to realise that Ms Jackie was using American products, which wasn’t going to work for me as a British girl. Thank God for the recommended section of YouTube, because without it I wouldn’t have found the iconic Patricia Bright. One of the queens of Black British beauty, she taught a girl what the good products were and also made me laugh, which was the icing on the cake.

I could relate with Patricia Bright because she was a fellow Black woman trying to navigate the beauty world. However, relatability changes overtime and, like Jackie Aina said in one of her latest videos, some people are questioning if Black influencers are still relatable.
