A Black Woman's Plea: We Need More Black Male Teachers

I can count the number of black male teachers I’ve had in my life, from primary all the way to university - none. That’s right, zero, zilch, nada, none.

As a child, this wasn’t a major concern to me. However, recently, I had a conscious look at the school that I am currently based in and noticed that there are only four black male teachers, quite dire considering it’s an inner-city London boy’s school. Given this, I zoom out and look at other schools - the same issue.

Finally, I take a glance at my nephew’s primary school, and I was informed that the sole black male teacher in that school just left. 15 years later and my nephew's school life mirrors my own school experience. Needless to say, my heart dropped because 15 years later, children are still experiencing education without black male teachers.
