Have you ever wondered if we’re alone in the universe? For centuries, humans have been fascinated by the cosmos, fueling countless movies, scientific studies and a relentless pursuit of the unknown. In this quest to unravel the mysteries of space, Black women and non-binary people are not taking a back seat – they are at the forefront of advancing space travel.
Dr. Naomi Rowe-Gurney’s fascination with space began in her early years.
“I visited the planetarium as a child and was captivated by outer space. It was so vast and I had so many questions to ask,” Naomi explained.
Driven by insatiable curiosity, Naomi resolved to pursue a space-related career. Despite warnings from teachers and tutors about the difficulty of mathematics and physics, she remained unfazed and pursued an integrated master’s degree in physics with astrophysics. After graduating, she took a break from academia before pursuing a PhD in Planetary Atmospheric Physics.
