Being Black, Female And Not Living In London

In the book ‘Slay in Your Lane’' by Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinene, one of the early chapters is called Black Faces in White Spaces. Here, both authors beautifully articulate the moment they left their respective South London bubbles for Warwick University.  Yomi writes, “For many black students, university will be their first time living away from home and also often their first time living in a predominately white environment.”

Although I resonated with both women’s university experiences, there was one vital difference. When I entered Edinburgh University 6 years ago, it was simply an extension of everything I had ever known, a ‘predominately white environment’. If anything, it was the first time I had been exposed to so many black faces at once – and there were not even that many.
