Diversity data from a 2002 National Council of Journalists report revealed that there has been an increase in journalists from ethnic minority groups, from 6% in 2018 to 8% in 2020 and 13% in 2021.
Despite this increase, journalism in the UK remains a majority-white profession, at 87% in 2021. This lack of diversity, and the lack of opportunities for black women in journalism is the reason why Black Ballad began back in 2014.
We spoke to three Black British female journalists about how they carved out successful journalism careers, and how other Black British women aspiring journalists can do the same.
