How Some Black Women Are Finding Liberation Through Kink & BDSM

Despite being expected not to succeed in their role due to what seemed a lack of confidence, the late Mistress Velvet became a worldwide legend in kink and BDSM through their unorthodox practices.

Instead of diving into a “traditional” domme role, Mistress Velvet used their dominance over their dominant/submissive relationship to not lecture, but yes, expand their submissives’ understanding of the power dynamics. As they introduced the works of feminists like Mikki Kendall, Audre Lorde, Patricia Hill Collins, Ariane Cruz and many more, in their sessions, clients confirmed that their arrangement had an immense impact on how they interacted outside their closed walls.

Mistress Velvet’s passing in May 2021 left a huge scar in the kink and BDSM community, but their focus on healing Black women through BDSM is still very much present and inspires many other practitioners. Take, for instance, Shakira Scott, also known as Scotty Unfamous, a sexfluencer, sex educator and multi-award-winning author, and Sabia Wade, CEO of The Black Doula Inc, author and lifestyle domme.
